Number Day

We had a fun-filled Number Day celebration where children came dressed up in digits to help raise funds for NSPCC. Thank you to all pupils and staff for joining us to empower numeracy skills and create a positive impact in our community.

Polite reminder

Pupils are asked not to play, ride scooters, etc in the playgrounds before school due to the number of parents and other children on site…

PE lessons

All children are expected to take part in PE lessons when they are in school. PE is a statutory part of the curriculum. If there are medical reasons for withdrawal from PE lessons, please provide a written signed letter to the class teacher in the morning.

Fundraising

We are registered with easyfundraising, which means you can raise FREE donations for us every time you shop online. Over 7,000 brands will donate to us when you use easyfundraising – at no extra cost to yourself! These donations make a BIG difference to us, so we’d really appreciate it if you could take a moment to sign up. It’s completely FREE and only takes a moment.

Consider others

Please do not park across residents’ drives whilst dropping of your child. It can be very inconvenient, and you could be fined.

World Book Day

We love to celebrate books and our children love to dress up…..however, please don’t feel that you need to buy a costume for this day. We have dressing-up costumes for World Book Day that the children can borrow. Parents can come to The Roost on a Monday morning at Bonham at 9am, and Tuesday afternoon at St George’s from 3.20pm. If parents have any dressing-up costumes they would like to donate, please bring them to the school office.

Why is attending school every day so important?

Let’s aim high – aim for 100% attendance. This gives children the best chance to succeed. The government research says that in order for pupils to make the best progress, they should be in school at least 96.5% attendance. Do you know your child’s attendance percentage? The class teacher can inform you.

Curriculum @ Valence

Like every state-funded school, we offer a curriculum that is balanced and broadly based. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society. It prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. The National Curriculum in England (PDF)

We also make provision for Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice. Most importantly, we are also free to include other subjects or topics of our choice in planning and designing our own programme of education. This gives us the opportunity to teach Valence children about matters that are directly relevant to growing up in Dagenham today.

To that end:

  • Pupils learn about the functions of the brain and how to self-regulate. This is linked to the Zones of Regulation. zonesofregulation.com (link opens in new window) Regulation
  • We are a Rights Respecting School, promoting an understanding of the rights of pupils and the importance of their voice in society. www.unicef.org.uk Rights Respecting Schools (link opens in new window).
  • We access age-appropriate resources to help tackle serious matters of discrimination e.g. Year 6 study the story of Stephen Lawrence and attend sessions on the dangers of knife crime; Black History Month is celebrated every October; children’s literature is chosen to ensure a range of diversity.
  • Assemblies highlight the range of cultural and religious heritage we enjoy in our community.

We believe all children deserve a curriculum that improves their life chances, enabling social equity and mobility. Our school core values, PRAISE, are a thread that runs throughout the different subjects we teach.

We value the input of parents and welcome any offer of input that will enhance the pupils’ experience e.g. talks about different professions, stories that will inspire the children at assemblies, sharing about cultural festivals, cookery demonstrations, etc. Do let us know if you would like to come in and share these with the pupils.
