Intent

At Valence, the Geography curriculum is designed to engender curiosity and wonder about the world. It deepens the understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We aim to provide children with a broad and balanced understanding of our world and the issues that affect our lives both locally and on a global scale and we encourage children to ask questions and develop critical thinking skills.

We allow pupils to think geographically about the changing world, becoming critical learners and knowledgeable, responsible citizens who make informed choices and care about the future of our planet.

Implementation

  • School trips and fieldwork are provided to give first-hand experiences, which enhance children's understanding of the world beyond their locality.

  • The local area is fully utilised to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom.

  • Existing knowledge is checked at the start of each new topic. This ensures that teaching is informed by the children's starting points and takes account of pupil voice.

  • Skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

  • End of unit quiz is used to assess the children’s knowledge and understanding

Geographical skills are taught such as: interpreting maps, conducting fieldwork, making observations and understanding human and physical geography.

  • Children engage in topical debates about current news.

  • Children draw upon previous knowledge to inform opinions and drive further questioning.

  • Children study a diverse range of topics that investigate the physical processes of our planet, human societies and economic and environmental challenges within the local, national and global context.

  • Lesson content and tasks are designed to provide appropriate challenges to all learners, in line with our commitment to inclusion
